Jonson, Ben (1572-1637)

Ben Jonson was a distinguished contemporary of William Shakespeare. He was at the height of his powers during the reign of James 1 and is considered to be one of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods most successful writers. This recognition extended to his "informal" appointment as the first poet laureate.
